The Drive Dictionary

I have always been curious about death in complex systems - including machines.

Why do they age? How do they age? How often do they break down and how long do they live?

I took a database of every privately-registered vehicle in England, Scotland, and Wales for almost 20 years, and built the Drive Dictionary to find out.

The data contain ten billion repair records and sixty-five million complex machines. So, I built a comprehensive guide to the observed lifespan and reliability of more than six thousand types of cars, vans, mopeds and motorcycles.

Jump into the drive dictionary files below or the scientific paper here to find out.

The files below show the survival and breakdown rate of every single privately-held vehicle in Britain.

The files are arranged alphabetically by make, model, and year. Click on a pdf to download, please cite my paper if you use the data, and enjoy.
